Chapter 10

Marlowe’s cheek pressed against the leather of the passenger seat, the heavy sounds that had pierced the air and then into the frame of the car fading away. Wyatt’s large body still covered hers from behind and she tried to catch her breath against the heavy, solid weight of him.

“Wyatt.” His name came out on a strangled moan and she reached behind her to grab his hand. “Wyatt!” She squeezed, the move enough to have him shifting and giving her a chance to gulp in air.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine but you’re heavy. I need to breathe.”

“Don’t move from where you are. The seat’s low enough you’re covered by the dash. Keep your head down and as low to the floor as you can. I want to check out what’s going on.”

Hard, unflinching cop lined each and every word that fell from his lips, including the fact that he’d given an order he had every expectation would be obeyed.

But what had happened?

Was this a random act? She lived in a large metropolitan area and knew it wasn’t only possible, but it happened to people every day.

Yet even as she considered it, with the sounds of shouts outside the car a steady accompaniment to where she still lay in wait for Wyatt’s all clear, she couldn’t help but wonder if that was delusional thinking designed to make herself feel better.

Wyatt was working on a major case.

Was it possible this shooting was tied into that and not really random at all?

And if it was, what had Wyatt actually uncovered on the bottom of the harbor?

Even with her grandfather’s career on the police force and her father’s criminal acts, she’d spent no part of her life with active exposure to violent crime. The idea that it was closer than ever settled into her bones with chilling clarity.

“Marlowe. Come on out.” Wyatt’s hands were gentle on her shoulders as he helped her up, pulling her from the vehicle. A wholly irrational shot of fear raced through her as she was suddenly free of the car, her body exposed to anyone who might be walking on the street or hiding with a gun pointed right at them.

“Are you sure?”

“It’s okay. Cops are here and the area’s under watch.”

“Watching where? Those shots came out of nowhere.”

“They actually came from a nearby office building, three floors up.” He gestured with his head to the area behind them. “A team’s already on it and running down all the clues they can find, but the window the shooter was in has been cleared.”

It should have made her feel better, especially since they’d run down the origination of shots so quickly, but those lingering questions still filled her thoughts.

Was this deliberate?

And if it was, who was the target?

Who would even know she and Wyatt were headed into the city tonight? Or their exact location and where they parked.

“Is this about the safes?” The question was out before she could stop it, along with a shot of adrenaline that set her teeth chattering as her body processed the overload of fear and shock to the senses.
